:backhand_index_pointing_right: Start Here: Welcome to Thread & Hook

Welcome to Thread & Hook — a community built by fly tyers, for fly tyers.

Thread & Hook is part pattern library, part forum, and part preservation effort. It’s a place to share flies, learn techniques, talk shop, and make sure decades of fly-tying knowledge doesn’t disappear as old forums fade away.

If you’re new here, this post will help you get oriented.

What you can do here

:thread: Share & explore fly patterns

Create and share your own patterns, browse classic and modern flies, and discuss materials, variations, and when to fish them. Credit and attribution always matter here.

:brain: Learn techniques & improve your tying

From beginner questions to advanced methods, the Techniques & Tutorials category is the place for step-by-step guides, videos, and tying tips.

:bullseye: Join challenges & contests

Participate in seasonal tying challenges and community contests designed to push creativity and keep things fun.

:backpack: Fly Passes (coming soon)

Community fly swaps and passes are on the way. This will be the hub for discussions, rules, and participation once they launch.

About preserved forum patterns

You may see fly patterns attributed to tiers from older forums that no longer exist but are still available through the Wayback Machine.

These patterns:

  • Are preserved to prevent knowledge loss
  • Clearly show the original tier and source forum
  • Are reviewed manually before being published

If you’re a tier and see a pattern attributed to you, you can claim it and have it transferred to your account. See the FAQ for details.

Where to post

  • Fly Patterns → Pattern submissions and discussions
  • Techniques & Tutorials → How-to content and tying methods
  • Gear, Tools & Materials → Vises, tools, and material talk
  • Fly Challenges & Contests → Active challenges and entries
  • Fly Bench → General discussion and anything that doesn’t fit elsewhere
  • Updates & Feedback → Product updates, feature requests, and feedback

A few community guidelines

  • Be respectful and constructive
  • Give credit where it’s due
  • One topic per thread works best
  • Upvote good content instead of reposting it

This community works best when it’s collaborative.

Still early — and that’s a good thing

Thread & Hook is actively evolving. Features will improve, new ideas will be tested, and feedback genuinely shapes the roadmap.

If something looks off or can be better, speak up — that’s how this place grows.

Thanks for being here. Tight wraps and sharp hooks :feather::fishing_pole:
